Florida's Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program is one of the best gifts a family can give a 4-year-old — and it's completely free. 1. Following simple routines. Children who can move through a predictable morning — hang up a backpack, wash hands, join circle time — settle into a classroom rhythm faster. Start practicing a simple routine at home a few months before VPK begins.
2. Expressing needs with words. Encourage your child to ask for help, say when they need the bathroom, and tell an adult when something feels wrong. Narrating your day together builds this vocabulary naturally.
3. Early literacy habits. You don't need flashcards. Reading one story together every night, pointing out letters on signs around Palm Bay, and singing rhyming songs build the phonological awareness that kindergarten teachers dream of.
4. Independence with self-care. Zipping a jacket, opening a lunchbox, and putting on shoes may seem small, but these wins give children enormous confidence in a group setting.
